Moe Satt: An Introduction to Performance Art in Myanmar

Asia Art Archive in America hosted a presentation by artist and curator Moe Satt on the development of performance art in Myanmar, from the 1990s to the present day. Following Satt’s presentation, writer and curator Simon Wu, led the audience response, based on his own research and interviews with contemporary artists in Myanmar.

Moe Satt (b. 1983) lives and works as an artist and curator in Yangon, Myanmar. He has participated in live arts festivals throughout Asia , Europe and US. He has been invited to serve as the resident artist at several locations, including International Residence at Recollets (Paris, 2015) and ACC (New York, 2017). His work has been included in recent exhibitions, including Busan Biennale (2012), CAFA Biennale (Beijing, 2013), Political Acts_ Pioneers of performance art in Asia (Melbourne, 2017). Moe Satt was a finalist for the Hugo Boss Asia Art Award 2015.

Simon Wu is a New York–based curator and writer involved in collaborative art production and research. He currently serves as a Public Programs Fellow at the Brooklyn Museum of Art and the Program Coordinator for the Racial Imaginary Institute. He recently received a B.A. in Art History and Studio Art from Princeton University, where he worked with Irene V. Small for his thesis Resistance Performed: Politics and Aesthetics in Myanmar.
