The Asian American Arts Alliance is proud to introduce a series of conversations among Asian American leaders and creators to inspire, inform, and connect members of our community. We will discuss issues around identity and the arts to encourage participants to share their thoughts and experiences, challenge us with new ideas, and help us create the reality we want to see.

Join us for a conversation about building a design practice with womenswear designer Angel Chang, illustrator and designer Sophia Chang (co-founder of We Ascend, and architect Dong-Ping Wong (founder of Food-New York and Friends of +Pool), moderated by A4 executive director Lisa Gold. In conjunction with NYCxDesign, A4 presents a candid conversation with these talented and creative minds. Learn about how they built their firms and what they envision for the future of their disciplines.

Speaker Bios:

Angel Chang is a womanswear designer who has worked closely with fabric masters in the rural mountain villages of Guizhou Province, China since 2009. In 2012, she opened her workshop Atelier ANGEL CHANG to bring global appreciation for indigenous craftsmanship and reviving traditional fabric-making practices. Angel is a TED Resident artist, NEST Professional Fellow, and Member of the Alliance for Artisan Enterprise. She has designed for international brands including Donna Karan Collection, Chloe, Lululemon Lab, and Lululemon Athletica. She received her Masters in Modern Art from Columbia University and her BA in Art History and Visual Arts from Barnard College. Angel currently resides in New York.

Sophia Chang is the co-founder of We Ascend, a grassroots branded experience agency specializing in social media content, photography, branding, and experiential events. They serve clients in a variety of industries with the goal of elevating brand awareness and appeal by inspiring the community through diverse, unique storytelling tactics. Sophia hails from Queens and received her BFA in illustration from Parsons School of Design in 2010.

Dong-Ping Wong is the Founding Director of Food New York, co-founder of Friends of + POOL, and was a founding partner of Family New York with Oana Stanescu. Dong’s work has been featured in multiple publications and has been awarded the Diamond Award for Engineering Excellence, the New York Design Award for Best Young Practice and was nominated for the INDEX Awards in Copenhagen. Dong trained as a designer at OMA and REX in New York and EHDD in San Francisco. Dong graduated with a Masters in Architecture from the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation at Columbia University and holds a BA in Architecture from UC Berkeley. Dong is from San Diego, CA.
