AIL PALACES ARETEMPORARY HALACES: A SHANZHAI LYRIC
|When||24 Oct 2019 - 24 Nov 2019|
|Where||Abrons Arts Center
466 Grand Street (at Pitt Street)
New York, NY 10002
Bringing together an ever-evolving archive of shanzhai (counterfeit) garments, AIL PALACES ARETEMPORARY HALACES: A Shanzhai Lyric imagines bootleg t-shirt text as an embodied poem to consider models of collective creation and shared authorship. Shanzhai garments, created largely by Chinese manufacturers, feature phrases that offer profound, irreverent, and humorous reflections on contemporary life. The installation includes an experimental reading apparatus and meeting place, where visitors are invited to try on shanzhai shirts and look through related reading materials. AIL PALACES ARETEMPORARY HALACES considers how nonsense and poetic estrangement make space for hybrid, liminal, and illegible futures. Organized by itinerant research platform Display Distribute.
