Kadist Art Foundation introduces its fall artist-in-resident, Robert Zhao Renhui. Robert Zhao Renhui was born in Singapore where he continues to live and work. Through photography and installation, Zhao investigates the relationship between man and nature. He often portrays nature as a force that is unpredictable and mysterious and illustrates the curiosity humans have about their own environment. Working with a multidisciplinary approach, Zhao’s practice destabilizes the boundary between fact and fiction, scientific truth and artistic imagination. Zhao closely ties much of his work to a fictitious research organization called the Institute of Critical Zoologists (ICZ). ICZ aims to develop a critical approach to the zoological gaze. Since 2009, Zhao has also been affiliated with The Land Archive (TLA), an organization revealing man’s impact on his natural environment from an artist’s perspective, focusing on the history and changes of the landscape of Singapore.
Meet the artist over a drink at the reception. Zhao will talk about his previous works and his plan during his residency in researching the specific context of the San Francisco Bay Area. A series of new works will culminate into a solo exhibition at Kadist Art Foundation opening on November 19, 2014.
