Artists’ Reception: Friday, June 20, 7-10pm
This June the Lower East Side’s NY Studio Gallery brings together NYC-based artists Samantha Lee, Sandra Munoz, Chris Hong, and Sean Hanlon for Barbarian Sakura, a presentation of mixed media art inspired by the artists’ exploration of the Japanese culture. In some pieces, the artists invoke the spontaneous, free-wheeling, humorous, and perhaps, barbaric spirit of the Tokyo-based Gutai artists of the 1950’s. Other pieces speak to the timeless, serene, and pure elegance of the Japanese cherry blossom. All pieces of Barbarian Sakura, however, examine how exposure to this unique culture can leave the imagination in wonder. While the works on view in the gallery share the discoveries made by these artists in their experiments with the Japanese culture, the special events scheduled throughout the week offer guests a chance to explore their own connections with Japan.
