Inspired by the news headline: “Diane Tran, Honor Student at Texas High School, Jailed for Missing School.” BOUND, from acclaimed composer Huang Ruo, in a new production from ground-breaking director, Ashley Tata, examines the experience of a Vietnamese immigrant family torn between the notion of the American dream and preserving their cultural heritage.
BOUND explores the tension between personal and familial obligations, the duties that bind people and the conflict of choice. Diane (played by Fang-Tao Jiang) works two jobs to take care of her family; between school and family duty, she chooses the latter. The judge who determines her fate also faces a choice, between compassion and enforcing the law. Librettist Bao-Long Chu, says about the work: “To me, a Vietnamese refugee living in America, the notion of being bound to one’s culture (and the struggles therein) is not just an idea, but my life writ large.”
Starring Fang-Tao Jiang, Guang Yang, Andrew Wannigman, and Daniel Klein, with pipa performance by Zhou Yi and music direction by Alex Wen.
