This exhibition, curated by Gao Minglu, brings together works by three prominent Chinese artists, Wu Dayu (1903-1988), Yu Youhan (b.1943, Shanghai), and Zhang Wei (b.1952, Beijing), presenting a case study of the evolution of Chinese contemporary abstract painting since the early twentieth century. The works on view embody a dialogue between the tradition of Chinese landscape painting and the language of western art in which abstraction itself is a political stand and the terrain of the artist’s autonomy.
