The shin hanga landscape blooms from the union of memory and modernity. While nostalgic in their subject matter and woodblock medium, these “new prints” also reflect the infectious innovation of their time. Through growing realism, Impressionist techniques and a newfound global audience, these woodblock prints speak the influence of Western values in the search for a modern Japan. Presenting the work of Hasui Kawase, Hiroshi Yoshida, and Shotei Takahashi, Forever and a Day considers the Japanese landscape, not in its 20th century topography, but with a nostalgic yearning for a century past.
