Godzilla Returns! HIGHLIGHT
23 May 2017
6:30PM - 8:30PM
460 Park Ave
New York, NY 10022
Former members of the artist collective Godzilla and their successor Godzookie return for a reunion conversation! Building on the precedent set by the 1970s Basement Workshop and spaces like the Asian American Arts Centre, the talk will consider the legacy of these formative Asian/Asian-American groups that came of age in the 1990s to early 2000s. Given the variety of experiences collected under the terms “Asian” and “Asian American,” what brought these groups together, and to what end? What did they achieve, and what were the stumbling blocks they encountered? What about their approaches was unique to the political and social contexts of their time, what can we learn from them today? And what inspiration and tactics can we borrow from our predecessors as we attempt to build more spaces of inclusion and visibility for diverse voices moving forward, during this time of anti-immigration sentiment?
Participants include: John Allen, Tomie Arai, Sung-ho Choi, Skowmon Hastanan, Arlan Huang, Nina Kuo, Helen Oji, Athena Robles, Herb Tam, Eugenie Tsai, Lynne Yamamoto, and Charles Yuen. Moderated by writer and curator Ryan Wong.
