IL LEE: 978 celebrates the recent acquisition of two large works by Il Lee — including 978W from the “978″ drawing series — to the permanent collection of the Minneapolis Institute of Art (Mia).
This special presentation in our viewing room spotlights the “978” series of powerful drawings created in the late 1990s using ballpoint pen on paper approaching seven feet in height. In the mid-2000s, Il Lee transitioned to even larger-scale projects such as BL-071 (2006), a nearly room-sized ballpoint pen on canvas that offers up a signature motif common to Lee’s work on canvas and paper — a field of seemingly vibrating forms appears out of an expanse of markings. These forms and the spaces between them are defined by line-making of extreme and active inventiveness.
