Lent et Triste (Slow and Sad) is the title that Loic Raguénès chose for his seventh exhibition at CLEARING. Indicating a tempo as well as a mood, it references the composer Erik Satie’s music and melancholic instructions to the performers.

Lent et Triste is also the title of one of the four paintings in the exhibition which alongside Lent et Grave (Slow and Grave), Lent (Slow) and Seul à la Maison (Home Alone) introduce his new body of work, the “Planets” paintings. Bringing together the earliest hours of abstraction and the brushstrokes of postimpressionism, these simple yet sublime depictions of the solar system offer a cosmic counterpart to two new large “Wave” paintings. Here, the sea is evoked by a simplified pattern of lines that capture the movement of waves on monochromatic grounds, one bright blue and the other ashy pink.

Like Erik Satie’s music which often seems to have no beginning nor end, Loïc Raguénès’s practice speaks to a formulation of painting as a private and imperfect but adequately sustaining pursuit which the artist maintains as a positive response to old, unsolvable problems.
