Join us virtually on Tuesday, April 13 at 5:00 PM EDT as curator and museum director Michelle Yun Mapplethorpe talks about her life and work with Herb Tam, MOCA’s Curator and Director of Exhibitions. This conversation is part of the series Curators in Conversation, where we learn about how curators, artists, and cultural producers in the Chinese and Asian American community approach their work. Michelle will discuss her upbringing, early interests in art, her passion for modern and contemporary Asian art, museum leadership, and recent projects, including Asia Society’s inaugural Triennial We Do Not Dream Alone, the first initiative of its kind in the United States that focuses on contemporary art from and about Asia and the diaspora, featuring more than forty artists working across disciplines from more than twenty countries.

Michelle Yun Mapplethorpe is Vice President for Global Artistic Programs at Asia Society, Director of Asia Society Museum in New York, and Artistic Director of the Asia Society Triennial. She is responsible for overseeing global arts and cultural programs for the organization, the Museum’s exhibitions program and its permanent collection. Yun Mapplethorpe is a widely-published author and frequent lecturer on modern and contemporary Asian art. She earned her M.A. in modern art and critical studies from Columbia University and her B.A. from Mount Holyoke College. She is a graduate of the Getty Leadership Institute’s Executive Education Program for Museum Leaders and sits on the advisory board of the Mount Holyoke College Art Museum. Prior to her appointment to Asia Society, Yun Mapplethorpe was Curator of the Hunter College Art Galleries. She has served as Project Director of Cai Guo-Qiang’s studio and as Curatorial Assistant in the Department of Painting and Sculpture at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, in addition to organizing numerous independently curated exhibitions.
