In its 37th year, the Asian American International Film Festival continues to explore a diverse range of themes relevant to the Asian and Asian American experience. This year, the festival intends to address immediate and historical topics such as labor, global justice, representation, and homecoming. The exciting lineup presents a total of 18 features and 33 shorts, ranging over 21 countries and regions, providing audiences a comprehensive picture of the very best Asian and Asian American media creators today. The opening film of AAIFF’14 is Sold, directed by Jeffrey D. Brown, produced by Jane Charles and executive produced by Emma Thompson. Adapted from Patricia McCormick’s novel, Sold tells the story of an extraordinary thirteen-year-old girl living in Nepal who becomes a victim of human trafficking and must risk everything to escape.
