Christopher K. Ho’s solo exhibition RENT combines the artist’s previous explorations of furniture design and institutional critique. With characteristic wit, Ho presents a set of painter’s palettes. These functional pieces aim to be the Williams-Sonoma of palettes.
In conventional narratives, artists gentrify a neighborhood, a process that in turn prices out those very artists. RENT examines the parallel, less examined, gentrification that can happen within an artist’s trajectory and practice. A trio of painter’s palettes in the logic and language of loft-style furniture occupies Fjord’s front room. Rather than a single sheet of glass, each consists of seven sheets, back-painted respectively in warm gray, cool gray, and tan gradients. The palette racks are emphatically pragmatic: stacked upwards to save space and on industrial casters, the graduated values facilitate the nuanced color mixing demanded by the most precise painters.
In Fjord’s back room is a single 1:2 rendition of the palettes in museum board and balsa wood, i.e., the materials of real estate development models. Scale figures, one for each of seven-member artist collective Fjord, occupy the model’s seven levels.
Christopher K. Ho lives and works in New York. Solo exhibitions include Demoiselles d’Avignon at Y Gallery, New York (2013); Privileged White People at Forever & Today, Inc., New York (2013); Lesbian Mountains in Love at the Des Moines Art Center (2011); Regional Painting and Happy Birthday at Winkleman Gallery, New York (2010, 2008); and Et in Arcadia Ego at Galeria EDS, Mexico City (2009). He participated in the Incheon Biennale (2009), the Chinese Biennial, Beijing (2009), and Busan Biennale (2008). His work has been reviewed and featured in the New York Times, Art in America, Modern Painters, ArtReview, and Artforum.
