The Butterfly Lovers, the Cultural Revolution and the Arts in China
Theater Dance, and Performance Studies professor SanSan Kwan, East Asian Languages and Cultures professor Andrew Jones, and UC Davis East Asian Languages and Culture professor Xiaomei Chen discuss the history of the Chinese Cultural Revolution in relation to the performing arts, examining the continued impact post-Mao Cultural Revolution aesthetics has on the arts today. Organized by Cal Performances in collaboration with the Center for Chinese Studies.
Programmed in conjunction with the Cal Performances presentation of Shanghai Ballet at Zellerbach Hall on November 1 and 2 and BAM/PFA’s presentation of Yang Fudong: Estranged Paradise and Beauty Revealed: Images of Women in Qing Dynasty Painting.
