27 Mar 2021
2:00PM - 3:00PM
291 Church St
New York, NY 10013
An online performance with tarot readings by Dr. Samaher in conjunction with Queer-y-ing the Arab, on view online and at apexart.
Famous for her Xanax and wine readings, Dr. Samaher is hailed from the sandy lands of Aladdina & ja’afarina.
The Dr. will show you her white hair and the trop tards tartar of a life we are having. She will blend tarot readings with scenes from Egyptian movies about belly dancers, how they are desired yet pushed away from the social acceptance.
VERY DR SAMAHER, PHD in tarot.
A post-performance conversation with Rima Najdi will be guided by curator, The Earl of Bushwick.
Queer-y-ing the Arab is an apexart 2020-2021 NYC Open Call Exhibition curated by The Earl of Bushwick. The exhibition is on view at apexart and online from March 18 – May 15, 2021.
Rima Najdi is a Berlin-based performance artist. Her work occupies and (re)negotiates in-between spaces. She grapples with the ways in which identity is constructed and perceived, focusing on the lived experience of the body. She is interested in the vulnerability of the body in relation to the politicized tropes of gender, safety, mobility and representation. In action or as artefact, her work politicizes the self, the body and the emotions as a starting point to recast the act of self-imagining.
The Earl of Bushwick is a playful artistic persona. As a non-binary queer Arab and immigrant, they are concerned with ideas of the Queer, the Other, and issues of not belonging, especially as it applies to art and class. Through their fluid night practice, they share and create safe spaces for identities and artists who do not fit or belong, as the Earl themselves spends their days operating as an orthopedic surgeon. Their home in Brooklyn, dubbed The Earl’s Court (2015), is a long-running safe space and art project.
