Back by popular demand, Asia Art Archive in America hosted a bookbinding workshop for participants to experience a hands-on exploration of the physical structure and metaphorical possibilities of the book form. This workshop included a brief introduction to the history of artists’ books and highlighted from AAA-A’s artists’ book collection, as well as three styles of bookbinding: Hidden Book, 3-hole Pamphlet, and Stab-binding. The workshop was led by Chang Yuchen, an artist, bookmaker, and co-author of Book Book / 书书. Bookbinding tools and materials were provided for all participants. Total running time was 3 hours.

This workshop was part of a series of programs at AAA-A throughout Summer 2019 in conjunction with the Under the Influence: A Traveling Library of Books that Inspire Artists installation.

Born and raised in China, Chang Yuchen is an artist based in New York. She is a recipient of Luminarts Fellowship, Vermont Studio Center Artist’s Grant, Elinchrom Scholarship, as well as an artist in residency at Textile Art Center (NY) and Bananafish Books (Shanghai). Her works have been shown at Assembly Room (NY), Salt Projects (Beijing), Chambers Fine Art (NY), Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts (NY), Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art, The San Francisco Center for the Book and etc. Her works are collected by Thomas J. Watson Library (NY), MoMA Library (NY) and Joan Flasch Artists’ Book Collection (Chicago). Yuchen is currently an artist in residency at Museum of Art and Design (NY).
