Chapter 3 / on longings, an exhibition of Catherine Lyu and Cary Leibowitz curated by Esme Graham, transforms the studio space into a domestic one. A chair and lamp take the place of an easel, mugs exist as sculptures. Lyu and Leibowitz shape an environment which both implies artificiality and acknowledges its showiness. The depicted space of Lyu’s Apartment 213 and indeed the studio itself have been manipulated in order to evoke uncertain bodily sensations. Leibowitz’s Official Candyass Muggery / Drinking Vessels 1990 – 2023 Index uses a recognizable utilitarian form in order to convey personal messages publicly. Chapter 3 / on longings investigates the idea of place: here, cracks in the home begin to show. This exhibition doubles and challenges the idea of home-making, seeing it as both tending to a domestic space and literally fashioning an artificial home.
