150 Bayard St, Store 1, Brooklyn, NY
Coastalvision: New York presents the first solo exhibition of cult Indonesian illustrator Kendra Ahimsa, aka Ardneks, in the US. Ardneks hails from Jakarta, where he creates intricate illustrations with psychedelic dreamscapes, intergalactic deities, and playful fusions of cultural nostalgia.
Ardneks is known for his collaborations with musicians, producing an array of iconic ephemera from posters to record jackets for artists such as Kikagaku Moyo, Khruangbin, Japanese Breakfast, Toro y Moi, Angel Olsen, and Mac DeMarco.
New York is the third stop after Jakarta and Tokyo on the international tour of the artist’s debut monograph COASTALVISION: Heavily-saturated Tropicália. The exhibition will showcase artworks from the past decade of Ardneks’ journey as an outsider artist, introducing US audiences to his kaleidoscopic world. Inspired by rhythms on repeat, the high/low blend of tropicália, and retro typography—Ardneks’ illustrations suspend the madness of today’s reality to invite viewers into a space for the shared human enjoyment of art and music.
Ardneks is a household name in Indonesia when it comes to colorful, whimsical, and peculiar illustrations. As a visual artist, he has worked with an impressive array of international bands and music festivals such as Desert Daze, Levitation,
Lollapalooza, as well as commissions from New York Times, LA Times, and many projects all over Asia. His monograph COASTALVISION: Heavily-saturated Tropicália was produced recently by independent Indonesian publisher Jordan, jordan Édition. Ardneks is also the guitarist of Jakarta-based band Crayola Eyes.
