Epic and Elegy: An Art-based Exploration on the Culture and History of Japan-ruled Taiwan

After discovering a family photo album spanning the Japanese occupation and the post-World War II period in 2016, artist Chen Fei-hao began a series of works themed around the history and culture of Japanese-occupied Taiwan. From his early works using text and language as a medium for “conceptual art,” to his later exploration of little-known historical narratives of Taiwan and the East Asian world, and his recent collaborations with recitation artists on Taiwanese-language recitations and short stories, he uses the “book,” the medium most closely associated with text, to reinterpret past video and sound installations. This book’s publication is not merely a painting documenting the artist’s work, but rather another form of artistic performance, allowing readers/viewers to delve into the multiple facets of the artist’s creation through this artist book.
