Independent Publisher Panel with Further Reading Press and Naranja Publicaciones

October 18, 2022 – October 18, 2022
6:30 pm – 7:30 pm
Asia Art Archive in America

23 Cranberry St. Brooklyn, NY

On the occasion of Printed Matter’s NY Art Book Fair, Asia Art Archive in America presented our fifth annual Independent Publisher Panel. Januar Rianto of Further Reading Press and Sebastián Arancibia and Sebastián Barrante of Naranja Publicaciones each shared the history and output of their presses.

Following their presentations, the participants engaged in a dialogue on collectivity and the role and context of independent publishing in Southeast Asia and Chile, respectively. Through this dialogue, we aimed to uncover thematic and ideological connections, as well as the multiplicity of approaches that constitute the current independent publishing ecosystem.

Founded in 2014, Naranja Publicaciones is a bookstore, publishing house and collection, located in Santiago de Chile and specialized in artists books. Naranja Publicaciones is formed by Sebastián Arancibia (architect and publisher) and Sebastián Barrante (visual artist and editor). The Sebastiáns are interested in the study of books as a form of art, publishing as an artistic practice and its intersection with other disciplines. Naranja is also an art collective. Both of their works are present in public and private collections in Chile, Portugal, Germany, the Netherlands and the United States.

Further Reading Press is an Indonesia-based, independent, multi-format publishing platform with a production and distribution unit. Further Reading Press seeks to engage in discourse within design practices by exploring the wider contexts through various programmed experiences, such as online publication, printed periodicals, pop-ups, and residency on topics relevant to/within Southeast Asia as well as globally. Januar Rianto works at the intersection between design, education, and popular culture as a designer, editor, curator, and producer. He runs Each Other Company (2015–), a creative and design practice; Further Reading Press (2017–), a risograph studio and publishing platform; and Jakarta Art Book Fair (2019–), a multi-day festival specializing in contemporary art books and publications.

Independent Publisher Panel with Further Reading Press and Naranja Publicaciones was made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.
